Curriculum Vitae After studying biology at the German Universities of Hamburg, Freiburg and Munich, I worked with the former Max Planck Institute for Behavioural Physiology  (Seewiesen, FRG) from 1972 to 1988, first as a Master and PhD student and then as an assistant. In 1988, I became a Professor of Zoology at the University of Zurich (Switzerland). I was Director of the former Zoological Institute from 2005 to 2009, Chairman of the Biology Section in 2008 and 2009 and Director of the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies from its foundation in January 2010 until my retirement on January 31, 2012. I have served on various national and international committees and editorial boards of scientific journals. From 1987 to 1992, I was first vice-president and then President of the Ethological Society as well as co-editor of “Ethology”.  I initiated and directed two German-American summer schools and organized several events during the Darwin Year 2009. During three sabbaticals, I was a Visiting Professor at Cornell University (1984/85), and the Universities of British Columbia (1995/96) and Edinburgh, (2002/2003), respectively. I am married to Heide Reyer-Sievers who runs her own text office “Tintenfass” (ink pot). Our daughter Wiebke is working as a PR officer. My leisure activities include travelling, photography, video-filming and reading, especially about foreign cultures and early explorer expeditions, .
